Not from fear of providing heat and electricity by becoming a part of the pile but from not wanting to get busted. I feel for them and their family but ...really? Empty revenue gons are okay (but usually dirty as hell) but coal gons are dangerous because of the dump gates on the bottom. There was no flat floor on any of the gons I rode as a youngster. The floor was just a series of steep "Vees" with dump gates at the lowest point. The other bad thing is the way they are loaded. The coal train slowly passes under a a drop chute and the coal is dropped into the gon with a thunderous roar, filling the entire car in just a few seconds. When the car is unloaded, they open the dump gates on the bottom and the coal flows out very rapidly. Either situation is potentially fatal for anybody in the gon. I cannot imagine sleeping through either operation--loading or unloading-- so I'm thinking maybe they were passed out drunk or stoned on something and were unconcious when the empty gon was abruptly loaded with coal. I did catch a ride in an empty coal gondola to a coal mine in ignorance once, in Colestrip, Montana. A group of MoW gandy dancers shouted at me and this other kid "Get off the train! It's going to the mine to get loaded!" The train was moving pretty slowly, so we dropped our rucks and bindles and detrained on the roll. We walked back to the MoW crew and asked where we were and they just shook their heads like "Kids. God must look out for fools and children." Then the lead man said, "You're in Colestrip, Montana, boy." We walked through town, there was maybe twenty mobile homes and a school with a 7-11 in the basement. When we got to the school, the sheriff was there shooting the breeze with a rancher and the woman who was working at the counter. He asked us where we were from, and we told him. We were black with coal dust, we looked like a couple of extras from a vaudeville minstrel show. "Came in on a coal train, eh?" The sheriff and the rancher had a good laugh at our expense. Then he asked the rancher to give us a ride back to town, where we started from and he did. We rode in the back of his pickup truck. When we got back to the jungle, Rufe was pissed off at me (he had shouted "Don't catch that train!" but I did anyway) and a couple of the older guys were giving me shit for being so dumb. Rufe told me to go wash up in the faucet at the yard shack, and while I was gone he rolled up his gear and we moved our camp to the edge of the yard. I was grateful, because I was pretty embarrassed about riding out to Colestrip and getting rescued by the sheriff, and I didn't like getting razzed by the older tramps. It wasn't all that dangerous, really. I guess one of the dump gates could have opened, but we were careful to stay off of them. But if it had been at night, and we had been asleep, I could see that we would have been killed if we were in the car when they loaded it. Coal cars are a shitty ride anyway. They're dirty, there's no safe place to ride, and if they are loaded, coal dust blows all over everything. You have also offered up the solid advice of not being fucked up/stoned/whatever, which is is even more solid advice. I take all of your advice seriously but NOT riding coal cars is one I disagree with. I have been on many coal cars since then and found a loaded car a comfortable ride, better than even in the back of a pickup truck. I was able to roll a cigarette and have a conversation at normal speaking tones, even in the snow. Any car is dangerous and dirty. You are not going to get off of any train without needing a bath. That's just the way it is. Have you ever heard of "hood surfing?" A few years ago I encountered a guy who had a large tattoo of the Vigin of Guadalupe inked on his back. (He had a bunch of other tats as well.) He and his friends had gotten drunk and somebody thought up the idea of going "hood surfing." So one of his drunk-ass buddies got behind the wheel and Mr. Art Work climbed up on the hood, and off they went, hollering and yelling and throwing beer cans ever which-a-way. Pretty soon, they came to an intersection, and of course, somebody pulled out in front of them. The driver stepped on the brakes, Art Work went off the front, but managed somehow to grab the bumper on his way under the car. The guy driving slammed on the brakes, but it still took a while to stop, and Art Work looked like somebody took a belt sander to his back. At the hospital, they had to do skin grafts to cover the deep-ass abrasions, so he wouldn't die. He was in the hospital for a couple of months. He had pieces of tats here and there and everywhere. The donor sites (where they got the skin) were big square raw spots on his butt and legs. He had leg hair growing on his back. I asked him, "Were you so drunk you couldn't figure out that if the driver hit the brakes you were going under the car?" He just shrugged. "I donno, man. We were fucked up, you know? And jus' barely havin' a good time." The guy was an unmitigated jackass, and deserved worse than what he got, for being such a dumbass. He risked his life for NOTHING--because he was STUPID. Lucky for him, society educated a hospital full of doctors and nurses to care for him and was willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to try and repair the damage he did to himself by being a thoughtless, reckless, stupid asshole. I hate to say that anybody who gets hurt on a train was asking for it, but people who don't follow the rules of trainhopping are basically taking tremendous risks without any reason whatsoever. Can you get hurt or killed if you ARE following the rules? Of course you can. But the likelihood of it happening, or the severity of one's injuries will be a lot less if you at least try to avoid the worst of the risks. Some years ago on this thread (I think) I advocated that trainhoppers should wear helmets, like motorcycle helmets or climbing helmets. Just doing that would probably reduce the head injuries from derailments or folding up a train by 95%. Nothing is going to protect you from falling under a train except avoiding hitting a rolling train to start with. LEARN WHERE TO CATCH STANDING TRAINS. Catching on the fly is UNNECESSARY. While there, he begins a series of radiation exposure experiments on American soldiers and civilian hospital patients. 1932 The Tuskegee Syphilis Study begins. 200 black men diagnosed with syphilis are never told of their illness, are denied treatment, and instead are used as human guinea pigs in order to follow the progression and symptoms of the disease. They all subsequently die from syphilis, their families never told that they could have been treated. 1935 The Pellagra Incident. After millions of individuals die from Pellagra over a span of two decades, the U.S. Public Health Service finally acts to stem the disease. I met Dr. Garth Nicholson and his wife (also an MD) once here in Houston. Their daughter was an Army officer and a Gulf War veteran, and she came home from Iraq with Gulf #War Syndrome and her kids caught it from her. The Drs. Nicholson were research doctors and worked for M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston, in the Texas Medical Center. They decided to research GWS. Being a hobo might be a plus as you would already be familar with the railroad enviroment. Both railroads have a long pain in the ass application procces and will require you to go to training for 4-6 weeks and may require a up front fee for schooling. I know for a fact they are hiring because I just met some greenhorns at the local pub in New Castle for CSX and talked to a new NS female conducter at the local motel where I get my coffee. As of late I have been riding 53s...How you might ask? 53s are 3-5 car long artuculated sets coupled by perm couples. At each end of the set is the brake rigging and a mini well about 2 feet wide and a porch. The metal flaps on tthe sides can keep you from being spotted.I also have been riding first generation SP Econostacks which have a flat covered riding area between the braces. There is no reason to ride suicide if you know what you are lookinng for.
