Pfffffft--
I been wondering where you got off to, man! As far as I know, the Hilton is still alive and well, but the last time I was up there UP was doing beaucoup track work, and had erected some new fencing to discourage people from approaching the wye in vehicles, but I doubt it has slowed down tramps on foot at all. When I first started frequenting the jungle (years ago) we never saw any bulls, and only very rarely saw anybody except train crews. There's more traffic these days, and probably it's our own fault for building the Hilton in the first place. It does attract local kids (and at least a few drug addicts) as well as tramps. Good to hear from you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As for Texas Mad Man having a daughter, I don't think he does, but I'm not 100% sure. He was (is) a very secretive kind of guy, and even his closest friends (which I'm not) did not know his real name. He used to talk about having a son that is a banker or something, but in retrospect that story might just be part of his smokescreen. I hear he got fifteen years in the Federal pen, and considering his poor health and his age, I doubt he will ever get out of prison alive. I have known several people in my life who were sentenced to prison for long stretches. All I can say is that breaking the law is a very bad idea, because if (when) you get caught the consequences can be pretty awful. I pretty much avoid lawbreaking altogether, with the single exception of riding a train once in a while. \"I\'d rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than any city on earth\" Steve McQueen

Just rode piggybacks from Spokane to Whitefish and back. Slept in the jungle a few nights and cleaned it up. Throw your trash on the train!

Fran the Hobo Minstrel caught the Westbound yesterday. RIP, brother. He was in poor health, and died of a brain aneurysm in the hospital.

Cool. A forty-miler has to beat a "no-miler," which is what I've been for a number of years now. I tell you true, boys, I CANNOT FUCKIN' WAIT until I retire. Three years. It might as well be thirty-three. Seems like fuckin' forever.

Well, so far I've written a screenplay and a cook book. I'm thinking about self-publishing the cook book. I don't know, man--I think books on hoboing kind of ought to be published by full-time, 24-7 tramps, not old usta-be's like me. You know? I got three years to go until I can retire, so if I make it, maybe I'll write one then.
Anybody know of a likely publisher? Or even an agent? \"I\'d rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than any city on earth\" Steve McQueen

It's the humidity---or rather, the lack thereof, where you are.
September's nearly over and it's STILL FREAKIN' SUMMER HERE. Please, Mr. Winter, hurry your ass up. (You know you live in the sub-tropics when . . . you can go surfing on Christmas Day.) \"I\'d rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than any city on earth\" Steve McQueen

Heard from Stretch yesterday. He's headed for Mississippi to visit his girlfriend with a young trainhopper in tow. They called me from the yard in Fulton, KY.
He said he got busted for trespassing in Memphis and spent a couple of days in jail, but wasn't too concerned now that he no longer has Burl to worry about. The only problem was that the police confiscated his gear and were making a huge hassle out of getting it back. He was released to the street with nothing but the clothes on his back, but apparently he has acquired different gear--an ALICE pack, USGI sleeping bag, etc. This is something I definitely do not understand. How can the police confiscate a tramp's personal property without due process of law? No court order means illegal confiscation. To me, it seems like it borders on "official oppression by law enforcement officers." Confiscating a tramp's pack and bedroll without due process of law is tantamount to confiscating a straight citizen's house or car without due process of law. It's just straight up unconstitutional. \"I\'d rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than any city on earth\" Steve McQueen

I went on a tour of Houston yards and catch-outs with Roadkill yesterday. WEe drove around and looked at Englewood, and tried to get to Settegast Yard, but that neighborhood is so bad I didn't want to stay there long. We visited the Eureka Hilton, and I'm sorry I did. I don't know why I ever hope that tramps will ever take care of the jungle, but I do. It was a disaster--piles and piles of garbage and filthy, wet clothes everywhere. The area around the jungle is littered with probably hundreds of empty wine bottles and beer cans. The interior is totally trashed--filthy dirty, totally unkept. It looks like totally ignorant homebum idiots have been staying there, dragging up all kinds of useless shit--junked bicycles, broken electrical crap, etc., etc. Too stupid to burn their own garbage, too stupid to realize if they throw trash on the ground it's going to attract the cops.
I'm sorry we built it, really. I kind of wanted to just torch it. Ignorant fucking assholes. \"I\'d rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than any city on earth\" Steve McQueen

That sucks. All the effort you guys put into it just for some junkie, wino pieces of shit to ruin it for the tramps. You should have torched it. Let the rats rebuild. (ya right)
Kind of makes me wonder how the jungle down by CSX headquarters in Jacksonville is doing. That was nice. All kinds of bamboo frames that all you had to do was throw a tarp over and be all right. The homebums had trashed the area around it so the guy manning the drawbridge was pretty uptight but the jungle proper was awesome. 7 feet 2 inches from clarity
